Rachel, Tavi, and Zijie discussed their research and led activities for students in grades 7-12 who participated in the UMich program, Discover Engineering. Students learned about concentrating sunlight and how to capture carbon dioxide from ocean water.

Zijie’s paper entitled, “Radiative view factor correlations in particulate media from ray tracing simulations and data-driven modeling” was published in International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer (IJHMT). This work developed the correlations for particle-particle and particle-wall radiative view factors, which are physically interpretable while accounting for shading effects. Rohini has been awarded the 2023 ASME Bergles-Rohsenow Young Investigator Award in Heat Transfer “for outstanding early-career contributions to the application of radiative heat transfer science to solar thermal and thermochemical technologies.” Read more about the announcement here.

Mike and Rachel were selected as finalists for the ME department’s 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. They were tasked with presenting their research with one slide and a strict three minute time limit. Rachel was the winner of the People’s Choice award, good for a prize of $1,100!

Zijie gave a poster presentation entitled, “Modeling Multimode Heat Transfer with Temperature Dependent Thermophysical Properties for Granular Flows” in the MICDE’s 2023 annual symposium: Emerging and Future Paradigms for High Performance Computing.
